The news for US Parkinson's Disease patients waiting for an early FDA clearance of the Neurpro patch formulation is not good. On April 23, 2010 UCB announced the receipt of the FDA response letter. The FDA informed UCB Pharma that it will have to resolve all crystallization issues with the Neupro® patch. Apparently the policy is zero tolerance despite the fact that the patch was returned to the European market about 10 months ago.

OTTAWA - Health Canada, in consultation with GlaxoSmithKline, has revised the provisional expiry date of the adjuvanted H1N1 vaccine (Arepanrix). This revision is not safety-related but is due to a decline in strength of the H1N1 antigen in specific lots.

Based on the best scientific evidence available at the time of authorization in October 2009, a provisional expiry date of 18 months was set for Arepanrix. As a condition of the vaccine authorization, subsequent potency testing carried out by Health Canada and GlaxoSmithKline has determined that the expiry date for unused lots of Arepanrix should be revised to six months.

Canadians can be confident that all vaccinations performed to date using Arepanrix have provided them with a sufficient immune response against H1N1 infection. Health Canada's rigorous standards for vaccine safety, quality and effectiveness prohibit the release of any lot of a vaccine without evidence that it meets specifications.

Health Canada has informed the provincial and territorial governments about the decline in strength of unused Arepanrix. Guidance on appropriate re-labelling for unused vaccine that has not yet expired will shortly be provided to public health officials.

OTTAWA - Health Canada is warning Canadians that an unauthorized health product, "West Pharm Therma Lean Fat Burner Energizer" was found on the Canadian market. West Pharm Therma Lean Fat Burner Energizer contains Ephedrine and caffeine, which combined together, may cause serious and possibly fatal adverse effects. Canadians suffering from heart conditions, high blood pressure and diabetes are among those particularly at risk. The product was distributed across Canada via the internet by Nutrition First (www.nutritionfirst.ca), a company located in Nova Scotia.

Health Canada has issued a letter to the company advising them to cease the sale and advertising of this product. The company has agreed to remove the product from the market and has closed down their website. Health Canada is also working with the Canada Border Services Agency to stop future importation of any shipments of "West Pharm Therma Lean Fat Burner Energizer" from entering Canada.

Ephedrine taken in combination with caffeine can cause symptoms ranging from dizziness, tremors, headaches and irregularities in heart rate to seizures, psychosis, heart attacks and stroke. Consumers who have purchased "West Pharm Therma Lean Fat Burner Energizer" are advised to consult with a medical professional if they have used the product or have concerns about their health.

OTTAWA - Health Canada would like to remind parents and caregivers of the potential hazards related to the use of drop-side cribs. In the recent past, Health Canada has worked in collaboration with a number of companies to voluntarily recall various models of drop-side cribs, as reported incidents have underlined potential health and safety hazards related to the use of these products.

There are a number of steps that consumers can take:

* Consult the Consumer Product Recalls Database to verify if their model of crib has been recalled and what further action is recommended.
* Parents and caregivers should also regularly verify the safety of their baby's crib.
* Cribs should not be used if any parts are loose or missing or if there are any signs of damage.
* Cribs should also not be used if they can not be assembled properly as per the instructions.
* Only parts obtained from the original manufacturer must be used for repairs. Broken crib parts must not be repaired with tape, wire or rope.

"Complete 7-Day Cleanse" is a multi-ingredient natural health product promoted for "cleansing" or removing toxins from the body.

According to package labelling, the product contains over 30 active ingredients, some having a diuretic (water pill) or laxative (stimulant, and bulk-forming) effect. This combination of ingredients may increase the laxative or diuretic impact of the product and pose a risk of dehydration and/or electrolyte imbalance.

OTTAWA - Health Canada is informing Canadians that Rolaids antacid tablets packaged in bottles of 150 and 100 counts are being voluntarily recalled in Canada by the distributor, McNeil Consumer Healthcare (Canada), Division of Johnson & Johnson Inc. The recall comes in light of reports in the U.S. of an unusual mouldy, musty, or mildew-like odour that was, in some cases, associated with nausea, stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhea.

The distributor has confirmed that the recall does not extend beyond the Rolaids antacid tablets packaged in bottles of 150 and 100 counts.
